I glanced up. The ropes seemed to be laughing at me.
I felt afraid, but curiosity drove me to pick up the harness, even though I knew I might not be coming down. When I had the harness on I could feel my heart pounding. A gust of wind felt so cooling as I stood rooted to the ground. I couldn’t move. So I stayed in the shade, and watched others go, and before long, I had plucked up so much courage that I thought I'd blow up if I didn’t do it!
When I unclipped myself, I took a few steps forwards. Then drew back. But Mrs. Morris signaled for me to come.
I seemed to glide up the ladder. I felt like I was about to fall off the tip off an iceberg, and fall into its freezing dark watery depths. I was also trying to ignore my butterflies, buzzing around, anxious to burst out!
I was halfway through the towering death trap, when suddenly the rope started to sway. I was slipping. I was scared. I was frozen.
Shouts of encouragement, sounded so distant, but I knew they were so close. They became more and more distant as I progressed, and before long I felt isolated from the world.
My heart was pounding louder than a car engine. It echoed bouncing off the trees. But now I had reached the vines. My consecration was getting lower, but the awful siren called fear was gone.
I slowly inched across the thin wire, and lay back slightly, to let the wind rock me gently side to side. My eyes were glued to the destination point. It’s leaves beckoned me as they flapped slowly in the cooling breeze.
I had reached the flying fox, and sensed someone or something was watching me. I turned, nothing. But as I looked down, I realized what it was, fear. It was supposed to be gone, history, dead. But it was back its deadly hum was the siren of my past. Its dreaded sound was slowly taking over my body, just waiting for me to fall hostage!
I tried to go back, I want to go back, I want to go home. Johnny just let out a small chuckle. I got a quick glimpse of his face before I went flying forward. I felt my stomach lurch forward. The wind pierced through my skin like hungry piranas. My eyes were locked tight together, they felt like they were about to rip out. I slowly opened them, the light was strong, but I was stronger. I watched the shapes of the trees unfold and turn into dancers.
My feet skimmed the ground as I went shooting past the last few dancers.
As I unclipped myself, I thought about this experience and said under my breath “you did it”
I looked up at the ropes again and smiled, you can’t conquer me!
